About us

The Geography Department of the Cluj Napoca Branch of the Romanian Academy was founded on the 1st of October 1947, by the Professor Tiberiu Morariu. Since then, the Department has hosted the growth of many Transylvanian leading geographers (Ion Mac, Victor Sorocovschi, Nicolae Ciangă, Wilfried Schreiber, Ion Popescu Argeşel, Maria Călinescu, Aurel Maier, Petru Dan Idu, Jozsef Benedek).

In the more recent years, the Geography Department has expanded its field of research. A more applicative side was added to the rigorous fundamental research, with the team participating in several planning projects and studies, including contracts with different partners from the administrative, social or economic environment (e.g. the tourism consultancy projects developed for the North-West Regional Development Agency in 2019 „Servicii de consultanță pentru elaborarea unui studiu privind inventarierea, evaluarea și prioritizarea punerii în valoare a resurselor turistice din Regiunea de Nord-Vest”, or for the Ocoliş commune – „Actualizarea strategiei de promovare şi marketing privind modalităţile de expunere şi promovare a produsului turistic din zona Ocoliş”, in 2017).

The team has had strong, lasting collaborative relationships with the Faculty of Geography from the Babeş-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, the Geography Institute of Bucharest and the Geography Department of the Iași Branch of the Romanian Academy. The collaboration has resulted in common research projects or the joint organization of scientific meetings and conferences (The international G.I.S. Besides, the Department has hosted a series of conferences under the auspices of the ZAC Symposium (Zilele Academice Clujene): One century of Geography in Cluj (2018), Geographic specificity and diversity (2017), Geographical risks and vulnerability (2016) Assessment of geographical resources as a premise for spatial planning (2014) etc.

The Geography Department of the Romanian Academy, Cluj-Napoca Branch has a good relationship with the Regional Research Institute of Pécs (of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences) engaging in three international joint research projects:  

  • „Comparative analysis of local resources and capital formation processes focusing on Cluj-Napoca and Pécs case study areas” Project Implementation Period 2019-2022,
  • „Comparative analysis of Functional Urban Areas of Pécs and Cluj-Napoca”. Project Implementation Period 2016-2018,
  • „Development of R&D potential of regional centres in interregional cooperation”. Project Implementation Period 2012-2015.
